Chapter Ten

The next morning Libby called Latham and found out that Bradley had been correct. Electricity at the house was simply a matter of flipping the main breaker.

“You’re on a well out there, so you’ll have water too, once you kick the electric back on. And you might find it a little cold in the evenings. I believe there’s an oil furnace out there, but I wouldn’t recommend turning it on unless you have someone check it out first. I’m not even sure there’s any fuel left in it.”

“I’m sure I’ll be fine,” Libby assured him.

“There’s still a bit of paperwork to be done, so stop by my office before you leave town. Oh, and one other thing.” She could hear papers shuffling in the background. “I was going through his file again and it looks like he did prepare a list of a few items he wanted distributed, but it was contingent upon your approval.”

“My approval?”

“If there’s anything on the list that you want, he wanted you to keep it.”

“I think whatever’s on there should be given to whomever he intended. It’s not as though I have a sentimental attachment to anything.”

“Either way, it’s completely up to you.”

Libby was less curious about what items were on the list than she was about the people he’d named. If there was the slightest chance she still might be able to learn something from anyone in this town, the people Shepherd considered personal friends would probably be a good place to start. She asked if she could pick up a copy of the list before she headed out to the lake and Latham said he would have it waiting for her.

After a quick breakfast downstairs, she checked out of the inn and then stopped by Latham’s to pick up the list. She arrived at the lake house shortly before eleven and found the breaker box at the back of the garage before letting herself into the house.

She supposed locating the items on Shepherd’s list would be as good a place as any to start. She dug the envelope Latham had given her out of her bag. It contained two sheets of paper, both in what she assumed was Shepherd’s own handwriting.

An unexpected chill gathered at the back of her neck when she started reading.

Libby, if these items are of no use or interest to you, I’d appreciate it if you’d see to it that the following folks get them. If there’s anything here that you’d prefer to hold onto, please do so, with my blessing.

Mark Shepherd

His use of her name was more than that. Obviously he’d known her name—he’d left everything to her, hadn’t he? Still, to see it used with such...casual familiarity. A familiarity that seemed at odds with the way he’d signed his own name, and was a little unsettling.

She turned her attention back to the list.

Father Joel Moore—My hand-carved chess set and the four-leaf clover paperweight (Don’t know if it’ll help, but God knows it can’t hurt).

Beckett Langstrom—My luggage, and some advice.
